Ovulation Induction – Dr. Divya Venugopalan, Bengaluru

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

IUI (intrauterine insemination) is a simple fertility treatment. Specially washed and concentrated sperm is placed directly in the uterus around the time of ovulation, which increases the number of sperm that reach the egg. It is often combined with mild ovulation-stimulating medicines and monitored by ultrasound.

IUI may suit couples with mild male-factor infertility, ovulation problems such as PCOS, cervical factors or unexplained infertility, provided at least one fallopian tube is open. The procedure takes a few minutes, is usually painless and needs no anaesthesia.

In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF)

IVF (in-vitro fertilisation) means stimulating the ovaries to produce several eggs, collecting them in a short day-care procedure, fertilising them with sperm in the embryology laboratory, and transferring the best embryo into the uterus. Extra good-quality embryos can be frozen for later use.

Dr. Divya recommends IVF for blocked or damaged fallopian tubes, severe male-factor infertility, low ovarian reserve, endometriosis, advanced maternal age, or when IUI has not worked. Each protocol is tailored to your age, AMH level and medical history.

ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) – Dr. Divya Venugopalan, Bengaluru

Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)

ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection) is an advanced form of IVF in which the embryologist injects a single healthy sperm directly into each mature egg. This helps fertilisation when sperm count, motility or shape is low.

ICSI is used for male-factor infertility, surgically retrieved sperm, previous failed fertilisation with IVF, and frozen eggs. The rest of the process is the same as IVF.

Ovulation Induction

Ovulation induction uses tablets or injections to help the ovaries release a mature egg in women who ovulate irregularly or not at all, most commonly because of PCOS. Follicle growth is tracked with ultrasound so that the timing of intercourse or IUI is right and the risk of multiple pregnancy stays low.

It is often the first step in fertility treatment and is simple, affordable and effective for the right patient.
